“SELF-CARE” ISN’T JUST A CATCHY BUZZ WORD…


It’s necessary to your well-being as a woman. No matter what you have going on, who you’re taking care of, or how much time you have in the day, you have to give some of your love to yourself, darling.


Still doubting me? Think of it this way: You can’t give 100% of yourself at work, to your kids, or in your relationship, if you don’t have 100% of yourself to give.


You’re the most important person to so many people, and you deserve to feel as important as you make everyone else feel. Luckily, it doesn’t have to take much time or money to show yourself a lil’ extra love. Here are some of my favorite free or budget babe tips for self care, so you can shamelessly treat yourself on any day of the week!




GIVE YOURSELF A SPA MOMENT.




It would be nice to spend a full day at home in the bath, margarita in hand and your favorite record on the stereo, but unfortunately, that’s just totally not realistic for most of us! So instead of a spa day, give yourself a spa moment.

Seriously! It doesn’t take long to feel pampered. Just keeping one fave beauty item on hand, like affordable clay face masks or a favorite nail polish color and top coat, can turn your home into a spa for 10 minutes.


Pampering yourself doesn’t have to be expensive or a time suck.




SCHEDULE A DAILY 10-20 MINUTE MEDITATION.


You might not have the time (or the budget!) for unlimited monthly yoga classes, but doing one meditation a day is not only an attainable goal, it’s SO worth setting aside time for! After all, meditation is proven to reduce stress, improve your emotional control, and help you sleep better at night (goodbye, annoying under-eye circles and hello, beauty rest)!


Free apps like Headspace, Insight Timer, and Calm are made just for this purpose, but if you’re not the paid subscription type, YouTube is full of free, short meditation videos that can help you find a mindful moment in the middle of a crazy day. It’s a little woo-y, but it works.

FRESHEN UP YOUR SPACE.



The scents in your environment can totally throw your day off balance. Instead of splurging on expensive, man-made home fragrances, here’s a thought…why not make your own?


Head to the health food store and sniff a few essential oils until you find your favorite (or, if you’re a one-click-shopper like me, go home and order it on Amazon). Add 1 tablespoon of alcohol, 6 tablespoons of filtered water, and 30 drops of your essential oil to a simple spray bottle, shake it up, and give your space a spray.

Your mind, body, and nose will thank me later. (I use patchouli)



PERK UP YOUR WATER BOTTLE.


Just drinking 8 cups of water a day shows your body how much you love it (and if you’re reading this right now: go drink a glass…I’ll wait). But seriously, babe. Adding a little somethin’-somethin’ to your beverage is a fun way to show yourself some appreciation.


No, we’re not talking about liquor (but if you wanna go for it, it’s 5:00 somewhere!). Slice a cucumber, juice some citrus, or pluck a sprig of mint for your glass. You can even add a splash of some of your favorite cocktail bitters. These little liquid additions can really elevate your afternoon, and make the chore of hydrating feel luxurious AF.



TAKE A FREAKING DAY OFF!

Yes, YOU! Do yourself a huge favor and take a day off work!

You know all those sick days you never use? What about the vacation time you’re racking up with no trip in sight? If you’ve got ‘em, those days are part of your salary—you’re entitled to them. Use those days off like you love yourself, baby.


If your job doesn’t give you paid vacation days (like when you’re self-employed and haven’t had a real day off in years… umm, hi, it’s me!), set aside your next day off to turn off your phone, sleep in, and give yourself a real, honest, true day off. For YOU.


Maybe that means you get to run some personal errands you haven’t been able to get to in months. Maybe you take a day trip to a cute town nearby for some antiquing. Maybe you hang out on the couch with your pup, eating chips ‘n guac and catching up The Good Place all afternoon. Maybe you take a day to treat yourself to that photoshoot you’ve been putting off (ahem!) However you choose to spend your personal day, make sure it’s all about rewarding yourself for everything you do for everyone around you, and taking some time to give that love to yourself. You deserve it!



THERE ARE NO BONUS POINTS FOR BEING SUPERWOMAN.



As women, we’re socialized and encouraged to give all of ourselves to other people, until we have nothing left for ourselves! We’re told to lean in and do the #bossbitch #hustle. We never shut off, because sometimes, we can’t afford to. Or we feel so guilty that we keep going because we “should.” But guess what. You just end up running yourself ragged, and it takes away from your ability to love those around you, and even worst, can be a huge blow to your mental health and inter-personal relationships across the board. The truth is: Self-care and Self-Love are truly some of the most important things you can give to yourself, and they are so clearly within your reach.


Now, get out there and treat yourself like the beautiful, strong, and deserving goddess you are!
